What Numbers Did Michael Jordan Wear?
Everyone knows 23. But across the NBA, the Olympics, and one very strange night, Michael Jordan wore four different numbers, and each one is a target for card collectors.

Michael Jordan is the most iconic number 23 in sports history. But 23 was not the only number he ever wore. Over his career he also wore 45, 9, and, for exactly one game, 12. Here is the full list, with the story behind each.
23: The Iconic Number
Jordan wore 23 for nearly his entire career: with the Chicago Bulls, later with the Washington Wizards, and in college at the University of North Carolina. The origin is a family story: his older brother Larry wore 45, and Michael figured he could be about half as good, so he took roughly half of 45 and rounded up to 23. The Bulls retired the number in 1994.

45: The Comeback (and the Baseball Number)
When Jordan first retired in 1993 and played minor-league baseball for the Birmingham Barons, he wore 45, his brother's old number. So when he returned to the Bulls in March 1995 with his famous two-word fax ("I'm back"), he wore 45 again, since 23 had already been retired.
He did not keep it long. During the 1995 playoffs against the Orlando Magic, Jordan switched back to 23. The NBA fined the Bulls for the mid-series uniform change, but 23 was home, and it stayed.

12: The Stolen-Jersey Game
On February 14, 1990, before a game against the Orlando Magic, Jordan's number 23 jersey was stolen from the locker room. With no backup on hand, he played in a generic number 12 jersey with no name on the back. He scored 49 points anyway. It is the only game he ever wore 12, which is exactly what makes a 12 serial on a Jordan card such a fun oddity.

9: Team USA
In international play, Jordan wore 9. He wore it at the 1984 Olympics and again with the 1992 Dream Team, because Olympic basketball assigns numbers from a limited range that did not include 23. Dream Team memorabilia and cards carry that 9.

The catch: sellers almost never put the serial number in the listing title. They list "Michael Jordan Prizm /99" and leave the actual copy number in the photos, so searching titles for "23/99" turns up very little.
